Somaiya Vidyavihar

somaiyaIt was the vision of Shri K.J. Somaiya that modern professional education must remain true to the spirit of Indian ethos and culture. He  insisted on value-based education, believing firmly that a community uncaring for its  traditions is decadent and insubstantial. He was passionate about propagating the Sanskrit language and the promotion of studies in ancient Indian thought and culture. He envisaged Somaiya Vidyavihar as the modern-day Nalanda University where students and teachers would live in an intellectual and spiritual fellowship.

The Somaiya Vidyavihar campus comprises 34 individual institutes dedicated in the streams of arts, sciences, management, engineering, medicine, humanities, philosophies and social sciences. The campus is spread across 2 main campuses – a 65 acre complex in Vidyavihar, in north central area of Mumbai and an adjoining 35 acre complex in Sion, both in the heart of Mumbai besides a number of other smaller campuses across rural Maharashtra and Karnataka.

Kitab Khana

associates_clip_image002_0000Kitab Khana, an oasis for book lovers, houses carefully selected curated books. The brainchild of Amrita and Samir Somaiya, this eclectic bookstore is part of an endeavor to re-introduce people to the joys of reading by designing a space wherein one can unwind and at the same time get acquainted with, among others, to a plethora of regional literature in Hindi, Gujarati and Marathi.

Kitab Khana is a passion store. Nestled in Mumbai’s historic precinct of Fort, the bookstore has an old world charm about it. The character of Kitab Khana is enhanced by the beautiful wooden shelves, the railings, the high ceilings and the wrought iron staircase – all of which have been lovingly restored by Mrs Somaiya’s father – Mr. Jitendra Mistry. The focus on promoting multi-lingual languages is one of the chief aims of the store. Even the children’s section is stocked with bilingual and Hindi books, with the intention of introducing our young readers to our National Language.

Since our opening on 3rd March 2011, it has been an interesting experience. Keeping our vision in mind, we are working towards making Kitab Khana Mumbai’s literary hub.
